Why carrier vetting matters

Freight security starts before the truck is booked.

Carrier vetting helps protect shippers, freight forwarders and customers from avoidable risk before freight enters the road.

Carrier identity risk

Carrier identity risk

Fraud can start with a company name, DOT number or document that looks legitimate. We verify the carrier behind the load before moving forward.

Authority and insurance gaps

Authority and insurance gaps

Active authority and shipment-level insurance details matter. We check key credentials against the shipment, not just the booking request.

Risk-based decisions

Risk-based decisions

Higher-value freight, sensitive commodities and tougher lanes require more scrutiny. Our review adapts to the risk behind the load.

How we protect your freight

Inside our carrier vetting process

Each step is one checkpoint a carrier has to clear before it can move your freight. Open each item to see what we check and what it means for you.

1

Identity & authority

+
What we check

We confirm the carrier's legal identity and that its FMCSA operating authority is active and unrestricted — matching what they tell us against the federal record.

What it means for you

You're dealing with the real carrier, not someone using its name and DOT number to pose as a legitimate company.

2

Safety fitness

+
What we check

We review the carrier's FMCSA safety rating and record — Satisfactory, Conditional or Unsatisfactory — not just whether its authority is active.

What it means for you

A carrier's actual safety standing is on the table before we commit — not just whether it's allowed to operate.

3

Insurance

+
What we check

We verify the certificate of insurance against the shipment: coverage type, limits, effective dates and named insured.

What it means for you

Coverage is verified against your shipment before it moves — not assumed, and not a policy that quietly lapsed last month.

4

Equipment & driver

+
What we check

We confirm the equipment and the assigned driver and dispatcher line up with the carrier we cleared.

What it means for you

The truck and driver on your load are tied to the carrier we vetted — not a quietly swapped asset.

5

Fraud signals

+
What we check

We screen for the warning signs of freight fraud — including carrier impersonation, double brokering and re-brokering.

What it means for you

Schemes get caught by the patterns they leave behind, not just the paperwork they present — the gap most fraud slips through.

6

Risk-based escalation

+
What we check

Higher cargo value, sensitive commodities and tougher lanes trigger enhanced review and escalation to our compliance team.

What it means for you

Your most valuable and most exposed loads get more scrutiny, not the same quick check as everything else.

Every carrier review ends one of three ways:
Approve Cleared to haul your freight.
Escalate Flagged for a closer look before we commit.
Decline Doesn't qualify — it won't move your freight.

We'll decline a carrier that doesn't qualify, even when it's the cheaper or faster option.

This is a high-level view. For security, we don't publish every step — the full carrier vetting review includes additional checks we keep confidential, so they can't be studied and worked around.

FAQ

Carrier vetting and freight security FAQs

How does GLT vet carriers before booking a load?+
Every carrier we work with goes through a documented, risk-based review. Depending on the load, that can include identity and authority, FMCSA safety, insurance, equipment and driver, and freight fraud screening. What you see here is the high-level version — the full review includes additional checks we keep confidential.
How does GLT help prevent double brokering and freight fraud?+
We confirm a carrier's identity and active authority before booking and verify we're dealing with the real company rather than someone using its name. Re-brokering and carrier impersonation are screened out at that stage, before the load moves.
How do you protect against carrier identity theft and impersonation?+
Impersonation is one of the fastest-growing threats in freight, and the FMCSA registry can't always be taken at face value. We verify carriers through independent checks — confirming contact details and authority directly instead of trusting the documents in front of us — and re-confirm on higher-value or higher-risk lanes.
What insurance covers my freight if something goes wrong?+
Every carrier we book must hold active liability and cargo coverage, which we verify against your shipment — type, limits, effective dates and named insured. Coverage varies by load, so we're glad to confirm exactly what applies before a shipment moves.
Does GLT keep monitoring carriers after onboarding?+
Vetting isn't a one-time gate — we re-check key credentials such as authority and insurance over the course of the relationship, so a carrier that cleared earlier can't lapse unnoticed and stay on your freight. We also monitor carrier alerts and follow a defined protocol to review and address them.
What happens if there's a cargo claim or loss?+
You have one point of contact and a documented process behind every load. We work the claim with the carrier and its insurer, keep you and your customer informed, and escalate quickly. We won't promise nothing ever goes wrong — but there's a documented process and a clear point of contact behind every load.
